EC temporarily allots drum symbol to DMDK for the upcoming polls

TNN | Mar 25, 2011
CHENNAI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has temporarily allowed actor Vijayakanth's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam to retain its nagara' (drum) symbol for the forthcoming assembly elections. The Supreme Court had recently rejected petitions filed by various unrecognised political parties, including the DMDK, seeking common symbols to contest the polls.

Meanwhile, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has ordered issue of notice to the Election Commission based on a petition filed by a Tiruppur-based garments manufacturer who claimed that 'beating drum' was the symbol of his brand of garments and that it should not be given to any political party. He claimed that he had obtained copyright for the symbol in 2009.

An EC order on Friday said it decided to make an interim arrangement to allot symbols to various registered unrecognised parties solely for the ensuing elections in four states. However, EC has allotted symbols only to those parties that have fielded a minimum number of candidates. Parties should field candidates in at least 10 per cent of the total number of assembly constituencies in each state.

If any of the parties failed to field their candidates from the constituencies intimated by them to the commission or did not meet the minimum number of contestants, then they cannot contest using their allotted symbol, the order said.

The EC said that in order to avoid confusion in the allotment of symbols, the chief electoral officer of each state shall interact and coordinate with the returning officers and get information about the candidates set up by the unrecognised parties. The information will be collected after March 26, the last date for submitting nominations.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), an ally of DMK, got candles' instead of its star' symbol as the party will be contesting only in ten seats.

Vadivelu's slanderous speech

Mar 28, 2011
Vadivelu is actively involved in campaigning for the DMK and began his campaign in Thiruvaroor on March 23rd in the presence of the DMK Chief M Karunanidhi. During this election meeting, he made some slanderous remarks about the DMDK Chief Vijayakanth and this was telecasted in some private television channels.

This provoked the DMDK functionary Dileep Kumar to file a complaint with the Election Commission. Taking action on this complaint, the EC has ordered the Thiruvaroor police to file a complaint against Vadivelu for defaming Vijayakanth’s image and to take necessary action.

Arunpandian to get DMDK seat?

IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, March 15, 2011]

With Assembly elections nearing, the bond between Kollywood and Tamil Nadu politics is getting stronger. Buzz is that a couple of popular faces will get tickets from Vijayakanth’s DMDK to contest the polls.

It is said that actor-producer Arunpandian and producer Michael Rayappan will be fielded by the Captain’s party in the April 13 elections, as both are very close to the DMDK supremo, who himself is a popular actor.

“But Vijayakanth is yet to take a final decision. Everything will be made clear in a day or two when the candidates list is out,” a highly placed source in the DMDK headquarters at Koyambedu tells us.

While Michael Rayappan, the producer of films like ‘Naadodigal’ and ‘Goripalayam’ is an important office-bearer of the DMDK, Arunpandian is a longtime friend and close associate of Vijayakanth.

Vijaykanth to contest from Rishivandiyam in Tamil Nadu polls

Actor-politician Vijayakanth will seek election from Rishivandiyam in Villupuram district in the April 13 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.

The DMDK today released the first list of 11 candidates for the polls. The actor, who was elected from Virudhachalam in the neighbouring Cuddalore district in the 2006 elections, has changed his constituency this time.

He was the lone winner for the party, which had contested on itsown in all but two of the 234 constituencies in the 2006 assembly elections.

Vijayakanth will take on sitting Congress MLA, S Sivaraj if the Congress renominates him in the constituency. The DMK has allotted the seat to the Congress.

The DMDK is contesting 41 seats in alliance with the AIADMK. Party Presidium Chairman and former AIADMK minister Panruti S Ramachandran, who unsuccessfuly contested from his native town of Panrutiin 2006, has also shifted his constituency. He is contesting in Alandur in the city now.

Pact with Vijaykanth major gain for Jaya

Hindustan Times
Chennai, February 25, 2011

AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa secured a major gain on her birthday on Thursday by sewing up an alliance with actor Vijaykant-led DMDK, posing a counter to the DMK-PMK-Congress combination in the assembly elections. The AIADMK and DMDK held their first official seat-sharing talks on Thursd
ay night and reached an informal understanding on an alliance.

Coming out of AIADMK headquarters, DMDK presidium chairman Panruti S Ramachandran said his party had taken a political stand to oust the ruling DMK from power. “Therefore, we are with the AIADMK. As far as the seats are concerned, we are yet to arrive at a conclusion,” he said.

Asked about the DMDK’s demand for 50 seats (of the 234 in the assembly) and a Rajya Sabha berth, he dismissed all such talk as speculation. “We have not made any demands or talked numbers.”

A formal announcement is expected on Sunday.

For some time, Jayalalithaa was on tenterhooks as to whether Vijaykant would throw in his lot with her.

In the 2006 assembly polls, Vijaykant’s party walked away with 8.34% votes, which could swing the electoral fortunes for any alliance, though the DMDK could win just one seat.

The DMK-led alliance had polled 44.65% of the votes and the AIADMK-MDMK combination 40.52%.

In the Lok Sabha elections of 2009, Vijaykant increased his vote percentage to 10.5, evenly spread across the state, but could not win a seat.

To date the AIADMK has signed formal agreements with five parties, allotting two seats to the Puthiya Tamizhagam (PT), three to the MNMK, and one each to the Republican Party of India, AIAFB, and AIMMK.

Jaya, Vijayakanth clinch poll deal

TNN, Mar 5, 2011, 05.56am IST

CHENNAI: Forging an alliance that gives the AIADMK a leg-up in the forthcoming assembly polls, the party's general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Friday signed a deal with Vijayakanth's DMDK to contest together. The DMDK leader has agreed to an arrangement which allows his party to contest 41 seats.

Accompanied by his brother-in-law L K Sudhish and DMDK presidium chairman Panruti S Ramachandran, Vijayakanth visited Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden bungalow around 9.30pm to formalise the deal. "We are happy with the arrangement. Our main aim is to provide an alternative to the existing corrupt and incompetent regime," said Ramachandran, speaking to TOI after the meeting.

The entry of DMDK into the AIADMK-led alliance that includes Vaiko's MDMK, the Left parties and a host of fringe groups is expected to provide the Opposition a competitive advantage in an election, which many political observers believe will be a close contest. In the last assembly polls, Vijayakanth's party got 8.38% of the vote share in a triangular contest, causing a significant split in anti-incumbency votes. He repeated the performance in the last general elections, raising his vote share to 10.08%.

The alliance, which looked elusive even about a month ago, was clinched in Jayalalitha's living room after an exchange of pleasantries. The cheerful AIADMK general secretary posed with Vijayakanth and his party colleagues for photographs after a 20-minute meeting.

An AIADMK press release later said the two parties had signed a deal to contest the elections together with the DMDK being allotted 41 seats. This was seen as a significant climbdown by Vijayakanth as his confidantes were hopeful of getting 50 seats. DMDK insiders said the party struck a compromise in exchange for key constituencies in the AIADMK's southern bastion as well as Chennai. There is talk that Vijayakanth's wife Premalatha may be given a Chennai constituency, said a DMDK source.

"We are perfectly satisfied with the present arrangement as we plan to be in the Opposition front. We are not concerned about the number of seats (we get)," said Ramachandran.

The coming together of Jayalalithaa and Vijayakanth marks a new chapter in ties between the two parties. Until recently, there have been acerbic exchanges between the two leaders with Jayalalithaa even accusing Vijayakanth of attempting to usurp the MGR legacy.

Jayalalithaa hands back 30 seats to allies, tells Captain to be content

CHENNAI: After hurriedly withdrawing its first list of 160 candidates following an outcry among allies that AIADMK had grabbed their favourite seats, J Jayalalithaa on Monday released her second and "final" list, returning 30 constituencies back to allies while ruling out any more seats to ally Vijayakanth in the wake of Vaiko-led MDMK's exit from the alliance.

The identification of seats to be contested by DMDK, the second largest party in the alliance, dragged for three days with its leadership learnt to have expressed unhappiness with more than 13 seats allotted to it. But the issue was sorted out with Vijayakanth holding talks with his senior party colleagues Panruti S Ramachandran and L K Sudhish, explaining them the rationale behind the allocation of constituencies. AIADMK also released the list of 41 constituencies allotted to DMDK.

AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa will kick off her party's campaign on March 24 from Tiruchi. Her aggressive allies, who even threatened to probe the option of forming a third front, disrupted her campaign plan, which was scheduled to begin on March 17 but was postponed due to confusion over allocation of constituencies. DMDK, CPM and CPI had protested that all their winnable seats were usurped by their major ally.

Jayalalithaa will campaign for 18 days for the April 13 assembly elections, setting her earlier schedule back by four days. She has sacrificed 30 seats from her old list, mostly in southern and northern Tamil Nadu. Of the 30 constituencies, she has given 13 to DMDK. Interestingly, DMDK grabbed only one
seat (Virugambakkam) in Chennai.

DMDK list of seats ready

DMDK leaders Vijayakanth and Panruti Ramachandran with AIADMK General Secretary J. Jayalalithaa at her residence in Chennai.

After two nights of hectic negotiations with the AIADMK, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), led by actor Vijayakant, finalised on Sunday the constituencies it will contest in the April-13 Assembly elections.

The DMDK has been allotted 41 constituencies. The list is likely to be released on Monday along with the seats to be contested by the AIADMK. AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa is due to release her party's list of candidates on Monday.

“It was a marathon negotiation. We have finalised the seats and handed over the list to our founder-leader Vijayakant,” said Panruti S. Ramachandaran, the party's presidium chairman. He was accompanied by the party's youth wing leader L K Sudheesh in the negotiations.

Mr. Ramachandran said that after getting Mr. Vijayakant's approval, the list would once again be forwarded to AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa for release.

After Thursday's turmoil in the alliance over the “unilateral” release of the AIADMK candidates' list for 160 seats – since withdrawn –, the talks with allies for identifying constituencies began on Friday evening and continued till the early hours of Saturday.

Though the AIADMK could finalise the constituencies with the CPI, CPI (M) and smaller allies, no agreement could be reached with the DMDK.

Once again Mr. Ramachandran and Mr. Sudheesh visited Ms. Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden residence on Saturday evening for talks even as the AIADMK tried to retain the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) in its alliance.

It was exactly 5 am on Sunday when Mr. Ramachandran and Mr. Sudheesh emerged from the Poes Garden residence of Ms Jayalalithaa and informed mediapersons about the completion of talks. Just an hour earlier, the MDMK had decided against contesting the elections.

DMDK gets 41 seats in poll pact with AIADMK

DMDK leader Vijayakant with AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa at her residence in Chennai on Friday.

Vijayakant meets Jayalalithaa at her residence

The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) led by actor Vijayakant will contest 41 seats as part of the AIADMK alliance in the Assembly elections on April 13.

The number of seats allotted to the DMDK was finalised after a meeting between AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa and DMDK president Vijayakant at the former's Poes Garden residence on Friday night.

While Mr. Vijayakant, who was accompanied his party presidium chairman Panruti S. Ramachandran and youth wing secretary L. K. Sudheesh, left without speaking to the media, a brief statement from Ms. Jayalalithaa's residence disclosed the seat-sharing agreement.

“The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam entered into a seat-sharing agreement with the DMDK and the party has been allotted 41 seats,” the statement said.

Mr. Vijayakant, who came to Ms. Jayalalithaa's residence around 9.25 p.m, had a nearly half-an-hour meeting with her.

The Left parties and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), the other major parties in the AIADMK front, are likely to be invited for seat-sharing talks in the next few days.

Left leaders said they were told that a pact would be sealed with them on Friday, but it did not materialise as negotiations with DMDK could be completed only in the evening.

This is the first time that the DMDK, set up in 2005 by the veteran Tamil actor, is entering into an electoral alliance. Contesting alone, the party had polled a little over eight per cent in the 2006 Assembly elections and over 10 per cent in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

Jayalalithaa gives Vijayakanth's DMDK 41 seats

March 04, 2011
Chennai: Putting at rest all speculation, DMDK on Friday evening signed a poll pact with the main opposition party AIADMK, led by Jayalalithaa, to contest the Tamil Nadu assembly elections scheduled for April 13.

DMDK founder-president Vijayakanth along with party presidium chairman Panruti Ramachandran and Youth wing secretary Sudheesh called on Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden residence in Chennai, to cement the pact under which the party had been allotted 41 seats, a joint statement released to the media said.

On February 24, actor-politician Vijayakanth's DMDK had launched formal poll parleys with AIADMK to "oust DMK from power". Though backdoor negotiations were going on for some time, it was the first time that leaders of both parties had met to initiate poll talks.

Though Vijayakanth has been consistently holding that his alliance was only with the people and no other political party, the DMDK, however, opted for tie up under pressure from party cadres.

Founded in 2005 by Vijayakanth, DMDK made its debut in 2006 Assembly elections, with Vijayakanth winning from the Viruddhachalam seat, even as his party polled 8 per cent popular votes.

However, the party's performance in the subsequent by-polls and 2009 Lok Sabha polls were sub-par, even as it played spoilsport to AIADMK's prospects by splitting the votes.

Vijayakanth leads DMDK cadres in seeking tickets

CHENNAI: Ahead of a seat sharing deal with the AIADMK, actor Vijayakanth on Wednesday kicked off the exercise of receiving applications for party tickets for the assembly elections by filling up an application form himself at the DMDK headquarters.

The Captain appeared to be a stickler for procedures as he submitted his application to the DMDK presidium chairman Panruti S Ramachandran, following which, party aspirants for tickets also started filling up their forms. On day one, the party received more than 1,000 applications, indicating the upbeat mood in the party. Party youth wing secretary LK Sudhish said there were 500 applications in Vijayakanth's name alone. However, it is not known as to which segment Vijayakanth himself has applied for. He was elected from Vriddachalam segment in 2006.

The DMDK will receive applications from aspirants till March 5 and start their interviews on March 7. Candidates are expected to be announced on March 9, said party sources.

The AIADMK and the DMDK are expected to finalise their deal on Friday. DMDK sources said the AIADMK offered 41 assembly seats and one Rajya Sabha seat, but their party was not keen on the RS seat and instead wanted 48 assembly seats.

AIADMK sources, however, said the party would not be able to increase the number of seats to the DMDK as it had to accommodate the MDMK, Left parties and other small parties. Loyal partner and MDMK leader Vaiko expected minimum 25 seats and Left parties have also pitched in with a similar demand, said a senior leader.

AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa is understood to have told her alliance partners that her party would like to contest a minimum of 140 seats in this election because only then can they hope to get a majority in the state assembly.

In a lighter vein, but striking a serious note, Vijayakanth remarked that the election and counting dates of April 13 and May 13 indicated the "play of the Devil" as 13 is considered an inauspicious and unlucky number. "So this is an opportunity to get rid of the evil government," he quipped attacking the ruling DMK.

DMDK ups stake, now wants 50 seats

CHENNAI: In the wake of the PMK joining the DMK-led front, actor Vijayakanth's DMDK has hardened its stand. The party is demanding 50 seats for clinching a pact with the AIADMK for the assembly elections. The DMDK, which had agreed to the AIADMK's offer of 41 seats a week ago, has increased the demand after the PMK signed a poll deal with the DMK.

"We had agreed to 41 seats earlier as we were given to understand that the PMK might join the AIADMK front. Even a meeting between Vijayakanth and Jayalalithaa was scheduled for 4.30pm on February 18. He cancelled the meeting on learning that PMK leader S Ramadoss had struck a deal with DMK chief M Karunanidhi," a senior DMDK leader said.

So far, several rounds of negotiations have taken place between the AIADMK and the DMDK. Though Panruti S Ramachandran, L K Sudhish and K Pandia Rajan represented the DMDK, and O Paneerselvam and KA Sengottaiyan the AIADMK in the initial meetings, all subsequent meetings were between Sudhish and Sengottaiyan or Sudhish and Jayalalithaa's confidante Sasikalaa. Initially the DMDK demanded 67 seats and the AIADMK offered 32. Later, the AIADMK increased its offer to 35 seats after the DMDK brought down its demand to 60.

The DMDK has even submitted a wish list of 67 assembly constituencies to the AIADMK. These include 54 constituencies where the party secured more than 12.5% votes in the last parliamentary polls, said a senior party leader. He expressed hope that the "deal could be closed with the AIADMK in a couple of days."

Within the party, Vijayakanth has also shortlisted 30 candidates including Panruti, Pandia Rajan and S Austin, Kanyakumari district secretary of the party. The actor himself will contest, but the constituency is not yet finalised, sources said.

Meanwhile, the AIADMK is learnt to have finalised deals with a host of small parties. It signed a pact with the All India Forward Bloc by conceding one seat on Wednesday. The Indian National League, actor M Karthik's Agila India Nadalum Makkal Katchi and director Seeman's Naam Thamizhar Iyakkam could be given one seat each. Actor R Sarath Kumar's Agila India Samathuva Makkal Katchi could be given two seats. All India Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam was given one seat earlier. All these parties are expected to contest on the AIADMK symbol.

The AIADMK is likely to give one more seat to the Puthiya Thamizhagam, which has been demanding more seats. The PT was given two seats earlier. The Manithaneya Makkal Katchi was given three seats recently. Jayalalithaa has offered 16 seats to the MDMK, 13 to the CPM and 10 to the CPI. While the Left parties had contested the same number of seats as part of the DMK alliance in 2006, the MDMK had contested 35. Jayalalithaa is leaving for Chamundi temple in Mysore on her birthday on Thursday.

TN: Vijayakanth-Jaya unite to fight Karuna

Chennai, Feb 25: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK Chief, Karunanidhi will have to cross many hurdles to win the upcoming Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu. Capitalising on the severe criticism over the involvement of former Union Telecom Minister A Raja and Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi in the alleged 2G spectrum scam, its main rival - AIADMK's chief Jayalalithaa - managed to grab the support of actor-politician Vijaykanth's DMDK.

The support from DMDK was announced on the Thursday, Feb 24, on the birthday of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Ahead of the Assembly polls, the AIADMK has the support of 14 political parties including MDMK, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, Republican Party of India, CPM, CPI, Forward Bloc and Indian National League among others.

The six-year-old DMDK was formed as an alternative to both the DMK and the AIADMK. Vijayakanth's party bagged more than ten percent vote share in the last Lok Sabha polls. Sources reported that DMDK would contest in more than 45 seats.

The AIADMK-DMDK alliance was declared by Panruti Ramachandran, DMDK Presidium Chairman. He said, "To take a political stand is one thing and to share seats is another. We want to oust the DMK government and that is why we have joined the AIADMK."

The formal declaration of the alliance would be declared by Jayalalithaa and Vijayakanth on Sunday, Feb 27.

DMDK in, AIADMK leads 14-party front

CHENNAI: On a day when DMK and Congress struggled to save their seven-year-old alliance, AIADMK strengthened its position by bringing actor Vijayakanth's DMDK into its fold. In a sudden development, DMDK's three-member election committee – Panruti S Ramachandran, LK Sudhish and R Sundararajan – arrived at the AIADMK headquarters on Thursday afternoon to officially cement the alliance and hold the first formal seat talks with the AIADMK team that included O Paneerselvam, KA Sengottaiyan and Pollachi K Jayaraman. Though the teams had met many times earlier, the negotiations were closed-door affairs and not publicised much as the two parties stood their ground on numbers.

DMDK insisted on 50 seats while AIADMK offered only 41. The final figure could be 48 seats, sources in the two parties said.

With a new partner in, the AIADMK has pieced together a 14-party alliance, including MDMK, CPM, CPI, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, Republican Party of India, Puthiya Thamizhagam, All-India Forward Bloc, All-India Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam, Indian National League, actor R Sarath Kumar's Akhila India Samathuva Makkal Katchi, actor M Karthik's Akhila India Nadalum Makkal Katchi and director Seeman's Naam Thamizhar Iyakkam. Formal talks have not started with most of these parties.

Emerging from an hour-long meeting, Panruti Ramachandran indicated that his party had finalised a pact with AIADMK. But he did not reveal any details as a formal announcement will most probably be done by AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa and Vijayakanth, who is expected to call on her soon, most probably Sunday.

Tamil Nadu: Jayalalithaa, Vijaykanth join hands to fight DMK

Chennai: Actor-politician Vijaykanth has decided to join hands with Jayalalithaa to take on DMK chief Karunanidhi in the upcoming Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu. The Captain, as he's called by his cadres, announced his decision on the AIADMK chief's birthday yesterday.

Vijaykanth's six-year-old DMDK, originally formed as an alternative to both the DMK and the AIADMK, had around ten percent vote share in the last Lok Sabha polls.

"To take a political stand is one thing and to share seats is another. We want to oust the DMK government and that is why we have joined the AIADMK," said Panruti Ramachandran, DMDK Presidium Chairman.

Jayalalithaa already has the support of the MDMK, the communists and Pudhiya Tamizhagam. The ruling DMK meanwhile has firmed up its ties with the Congress, the PMK and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal.

With Vijaykanth's birthday gift to Jayalalithaa, the alliance arithmetic of the Dravidian arch rivals has turned formidable and clear. As both sides work on the nitty-gritty of number of seats, the political temperature in the state is set to soar.

DMDK chief's wife may hold key to TN polls

NEW DELHI: She may not be known outside Tamil Nadu, but it is Premalatha who may influence the outcome of the coming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. As DMK and AIADMK prepare for the poll battle, the role of the wife of `Captain` Vijayakanth who heads the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has become crucial. Premalatha is a huge influence on the politics of Vijayakanth, and is the reason why the actor-turned politician is tilting towards having a partnership with Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK.

DMDK has emerged as a balancing factor, having polled around 10% votes in the last LS polls when Vijayakanth decided not to be part of either of the two alliances. In the process, analysts feel, he helped DMK by taking away votes that were arrayed against the ruling combine.

A key factor in the DMDK`s power dispensation, Premalatha had played a crucial role in drawing up the party`s poll strategy and detailing her husband`s campaign programme in both the 2006 assembly elections and 2009 Lok Sabha elections when Vijayakanth decided to go it alone.

DMDK sources confirm that for the coming elections, it was Premalatha who convinced her husband that aligning with Jayalalithaa`s AIADMK was imperative to keep the cadre morale up and build the party besides the possibility of playing a role in the state administration.

Congress leaders recognize the importance of the `Captain` factor, saying he may help Jayalalithaa neutralize the advantages DMK has — a well-looked-after cadre and goodwill from populist schemes.

"It can give AIADMK an advantage of 1-1.5%," conceded a party functionary involved in the Congress planning for polls. Congress is confident of doing well in four other poll-bound states — West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry — but it is getting reconciled to the possibility that Premalatha leaning towards Jayalalithaa can deny them the 5:0 scoreline.

Congress strategists reckon that an impressive performance in the assembly elections can help the party beat back the perception of loss of sheen.

Congress plans to demand a share in power if the DMK-led alliance is voted to power yet again, realizing that a share in the spoils of office is necessary to maintain the morale of the cadre in a state where party has been without power for decades.

The rival TN combines hope to work out the nitty-gritty of seat-sharing in the next couple of days. While negotiations between Jayalalithaa and Premalatha are in the final stage, DMK and Congress hold their final round from Wednesday. Congress is insisting on 60 seats, but is reconciled to having to settle for less.

The AIADMK's stand is that it cannot give 50 seats that the DMDK is demanding.

CHENNAI: The power dynamics of alliance formation is fast changing in the state as it gets closer to the assembly polls. The two Dravidian majors, the DMK and the AIADMK, have bounced back from a state of desperation. They were wooing allies into their fold till recently, but not anymore. They now exude confidence, as though having regained much of their lost ground. Both have turned tough negotiators with two prominent regional players the PMK and the DMDK.

The PMK's efforts to drive a hard bargain with the DMK, demanding 40 plus seats, has evoked only a nonchalant response from the elder partner. DMK president and chief minister M Karunanidhi has been maintaining a stoic silence on what he intends to concede to the PMK. A senior PMK leader told TOI, "We were the first to finalise seat sharing in most of the recent polls. But this time, the DMK leadership is indifferent to us. They do not even acknowledge that our party has refrained from attacking them on the spectrum issue. When our president GK Mani called on Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) on the last day of the assembly session, he said talks with the PMK were possible only after finalising the deal with the Congress." Even scaling down the demand to 35 seats has not helped the PMK much.

Having contested 31 seats as part of a greater alliance (DMK, Congress, PMK, CPI and CPM) in 2006, the PMK feels its demand for more seats in a relatively smaller front (without the Left parties) is justified. But the DMK's poser is why it be should be charitable to a party that came a cropper in the 2009 parliamentary polls. The DMK has indicated that the PMK should be satisfied with 23 seats, five more than its current strength in the assembly. The party leader, S Ramadoss, is unhappy with the offer.

The DMK knows for sure that the PMK does not have any other option. The AIADMK front is already crowded with the CPI, the CPM and Vaiko's MDMK in it. The DMDK is also likely to join the front. And, the PMK would hardly risk contesting on its own. "The party has to come to us, but only on our terms," said a senior DMK leader.

The position of the DMDK is no better either. The dark horse of the 2009 Lok Sabha polls was sitting pretty, sought after by both the major fronts. With DMDK leader Vijaykanth's continued verbal aggression against the ruling party, more so against the chief minister, he narrowed down the option - either going alone or allying with the AIADMK. DMDK presidium chairman Panruti S Ramachandran ruled out the party contesting on its own and even went to the extent of giving a call to all anti-DMK forces to unite. That was a month ago. But AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa has turned a deaf ear to Panruti's clarion call thus far.

A senior DMDK leader said, "We can make any amount of noise. We have also explained what our demand is. But what do you do when the AIADMK leadership is not even willing to reveal how many seats it is ready to give us? We know for sure that no party can come to power in the state without our support. Let us wait and see how the game is played out."

The AIADMK's stand is that it cannot give 50 seats that the DMDK is demanding. A senior AIADMK leader said, "We will respond only if they come down to a realistic figure."

Jayalalithaa, Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar, Karthik and Vijay

Chennai Feb 10 ( truthdive) : Call it a Cassiopeia or Cepheus, the AIADMK electoral alliance is evolving as a five star constellation to twinkle in the election campaign for the forthcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.

The stage actor and script writer M. Karunanithi rose to the level of the leader of DMK and was named “ Kalaigner “ meaning “ The artist”

When the M.G. Ramachandran the “Revolutionary actor” came out of DMK and formed his own political party he became “ Revolutionary leader”. The fans turned political workers have a habit of calling their leaders in such high degree name. When J.Jayalalithaa took the leadership of AIADMK she became ‘ Revolutionary leader”

The political ambitions of Vijayakanth should have been understood even two decades back when he took a pet name “ Revolutionary Artist” combining the pet names of both M.G.Ramachandran and M.Karunanithi. Later he found his own party DMDK. He commands a larger chunk of Naidu, Naickers and Arunthathiyar castes who have a Telugu origin.

When Sarathkumar became a hero in screen, Super star Rajinikanth was very popular and therefore he took a name “ Supreme Star”. This supreme star formed a political party ‘ Samathuva makkal katchi” which is more confined to Nadar community. He is supposed to contest in Thenkasi constituency based on caste calculations.

When actor Karthik with a nick name “ Navarasa nayakan” ( a hero of all the nine feelings}lost his shine in the silver screen he entered in the existing political party Forward block only to establish his own “ Nadalum makkal katchi” ( A party of ruling people”) Well the talk is that he commands considerable following among the youth of Thevar community in south Tamil nadu.

As everyone knows, the actor still in the field Vijay Ilaya thalapathi ( the Junior Commander”) is preparing his grounds in politics.

Like a rare celestial phenomenon all these five stars J. Jayalalithaa, Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar, Karthik and Vijay are to team up for the forthcoming assembly election. The people are waiting with eyes wide opened to see all these stars in one stage.

The star studded AIADMK alliance is all set to expand further if T. Rajender joins them as well. He along with other small stars shall make this summer hot or cold that depends on addition of one or two heroines who are still having market value. Let us wait and see how DMK alliance bring their own stars to start a star war.

AIADMK likely to partner with DMDK ahead of assembly polls

Tamil Nadu’s main opposition party, the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), is likely to strike an alliance with the six-year-old Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) ahead of assembly elections this year, members of both parties said.

But the tie-up, if formalized, will be little more than a short-term electoral strategy to take on the ruling coalition of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Congress, they said.

Tamil film actor “Captain” Vijaykanth launched the DMDK before the 2006 assembly elections as an alternative to the two established Dravidian parties, the DMK and the AIADMK. An alliance with either of these parties could tarnish its image as a fresh, transparent option for voters, DMDK party member K. Pandiarajan said.

“We will continue to have a unique identity of our own, and stick to our founding concepts in which clean and transparent governance is topmost,” Pandiarajan said. “Our rural vote share, built through the Captain’s fan clubs, is 12%, slightly higher than our overall vote share. But our founding concepts like ‘save Tamil, but learn all languages’ and ‘level up standards when education is made uniform across the state’ are targeted at the urban, educated electorate disillusioned with the present government.”

An AIADMK member, who did not want to be identified, said the party has no illusions about its relationship with the DMDK.

“We have to ally with DMDK because DMK has allied with Congress. We need those additional numbers (of voters)too. But it is a short-term strategy,” the party member said. “And we are going by what Amma (AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa) decides. So, it doesn’t matter to our cadre that DMDK was campaigning against us too in the last elections. We don’t think it’ll matter to our voters either.”

Contesting on its own, the DMDK polled 8.33% of the total votes cast in the 2006 assembly polls, and Vijaykanth won the Virudhachalam seat. The party raised its vote share to 10.19% in the 2009 parliamentary elections, although it did not win a seat.

Vijaykanth has been projecting himself as Karuppu MGR, or a dark-complexioned version of M.G. Ramachandran, the actor-turned-politician who founded the AIADMK and achieved considerable political success. The votes polled by the DMDK came from MGR fans from across Tamil Nadu’s social and political fault lines, and in a way cut into the AIADMK’s vote share. That’s another reason why Jayalalithaa’s party thinks it could benefit from an alliance with the political upstart.

Cho Ramaswamy, editor of Thuglak magazine and a political commentator, said the situation is too volatile for parties to decide on a long-term strategy. “If the alliance is struck, AIADMK and DMDK will remain distinct identities,” he said. “With new parties coming up all over the country and alliances shifting frequently, it is a time of churn and not of long-term stability.”

Jaya takes lead in seat deal

Feb. 15: AIADMK chief Ms Jayalalithaa on Tuesday inked seat-sharing agreements with two Dalit parties, the Puthiya Tamizhagam and Republican Party of India, kicking off her election work at her signature speed, even as the rival DMK-led front is still engaged in exploratory manoeuvres.

True, she too has a few imponderables, such as the alliance with DMDK of ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth, who may now feel the pressure on him to hasten his moves towards her camp.

Ms Jayalalithaa’s first poll pact was with Mr C. K. Tamilarasan of the RPI to give him one seat. He is likely to contest from K. V. Kuppam, a newly carved out reserve seat in Vellore district. Next, she signed with PT leader Dr K. Krishnasamy to allocate two seats.

As a former legislator of Oddapidaram in Tuticorin district, he may return to contest there. He is likely to seek Vasudevanallur (SC) in Tirunelveli district. The PT enjoys support among Devendrakula Velalars, known as Pallars, a dominant SC sub-sect in the southern districts, while Mr Tamilarasan belongs to another Dalit sub-sect, Parayar, dominant in north Tamil Nadu.

An elated Tamilarasan told DC, “I’m thrilled that Amma signed the pact with me. I do not know what else to say.” When asked whether he would contest in the AIADMK symbol or choose an independent identity, he said, “I have no issues. I will abide by what Amma says.” Dr. Krishnasamy said a decision on symbol was yet to be taken.

Though she has only signed with two minor players now, Ms Jayalalithaa appears be sending out a signal to Mr Vijayakanth that he needs to hurry up his act. He has been bargaining hard for ‘a respectable number of seats’, starting his demand with 80 seats but now sources say he might settle for around 45.

They also say that Ms Jayalalithaa is all set to finish her seat-sharing exercise and hit the campaign road on February 24, her birthday.

Vijayakanth, AIADMK heading for poll pact?

CHENNAI: A wedding in the family has come as a catalyst for actor-politician Vijayakanth to firm up an electoral alliance with AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa.

When Vijayakanth's wife, Premalatha, meets the AIA-DMK leader later this week, an invitation for the wedding of her niece, R Akshaya, will not be the only thing she will be carrying. Premalatha will also be Vijayakanth's representative to finalize Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam's (DMDK) seat-sharing arr-angement with AIADMK. And if all goes well, the wedding in Vanagaram could be the occasion for Jayalalithaa to announce her party's electoral alliance with DMDK.

"Premalatha has sought an appointment for this week with Jayalalithaa to invite her," a source said. "Jayalalithaa's participation at the function would depend on the progress of the seat-sharing talks. If she makes it to the wedding, you can expect an announcement about the alliance, which could happen even earlier."

DMDK presidium chairman Panruti Ramachandran refused to confirm the scheduled meeting and said the process of alliance formation was still on. "One thing is clear. We will not align with the DMK at any cost. The rest is yet to be finalised."

Sources said both leaders were driving a hard bargain. While AIADMK leaders said Jayalalithaa would not be willing to give more than 42 seats, Vijayakanth is said to be pushing for at least 50, down from his 60-plus demand.

DMDK drew a blank in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. But garnering over 10% votes, it sent a strong signal of a potential ally. In the 2005 Assembly polls, the DMDK polled over 8% votes but Vijayakanth could only win a Vriddhachalam seat.

Jaya set to seal poll deal with DMDK

CHENNAI: Suspense over which way 'Captain' would swing will end soon as AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa is all set to formally announce a tie-up with Vijayakanth's DMDK, sources said. The AIADMK already has the MDMK and the Left parties in its combine.

Vijayakanth's brother-in-law and the DMDK's youth wing secretary LK Sudhish has been holding talks with AIADMK leaders through some mediators. Leaders confirmed that the talks were going smoothly and the AIADMK is likely to part with about 35 to 40 seats which will make the DMDK the second largest partner in the alliance.

Vijayakanth's dynamic role in the blockbuster 1992 Tamil movie 'Captain Prabhakaran' earned him the honorific of Captain. His debut in Tamil Nadu politics was marked by frequent clashes with Jayalalithaa over his claim that he was MGR's heir. The dark complexioned actor is even hailed by partymen as 'karuppu (black) MGR'. But political compulsions have thrown the two leaders together. Senior AIADMK leaders feel that the anti-DMK votebank that Vijayakanth brings along could prove to be crucial in a closely-contested election.

The DMDK's electoral strategy has been fine-tuned by a five-member team piloted by party president Vijayakanth himself. Other members of the team are Panruti S Ramachandran, K Pandiarajan, K R Veerappan and Sudhish. There are indications that the DMDK has demanded 50 seats but AIADMK is ready to give 35 seats and perhaps stretch it to 40 if the DMDK proves inflexible.

Since its inception in September 2005, this would be the first electoral alliance for the DMDK. It contested on its own in both the previous assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

The DMDK got 8.38% votes in 2006 assembly elections, while in 2009 parliamentary polls, it bettered its performance by securing 10.08% votes. The party secured more than 20,000 votes in 27 assembly segments, over 15,000 votes in 75 segments, more than 10,000 votes in 169 segments and more than 5,000 votes in 228 segments in the last parliamentary polls.

On Tuesday, an AIADMK release said Dr K Krishnasamy of Puthiya Tamizhagam Katchi, a dalit party, held the first round of seat-sharing talks with AIADMK.

Raja's arrest won't impact Tamil Nadu alliances, say parties

Chennai Feb 2 (IANS) DMK leader A. Raja's arrest for his role in the 2G spectrum scam may not throw up any changes in the current or prospective electoral alliance formations in Tamil Nadu that is expected to go to polls this May.

'Raja's arrest is an expected one and it may not have any impact on the formation of electoral alliances. The DMK may take some namesake disciplinary action against Raja like suspending him from the party and try to distance itself from him,' Panruti S. Ramachandran, senior leader of DMDK party floated by actor Vijayakant, told IANS.

Asked about his party's alliance with AIADMK, the principal opposition party in the state, he said: 'We have made our position clear - removal of the corrupt DMK government and be part of a suitable formation to achieve that.'

According to Ramachandran, Raja's arrest may not impact PMK being part of the DMK-led front but a PMK leader said on condition of anonymity that the party would analyse the implications of the arrest.

'We have to analyse the arrest and its implications,' the PMK leader said.

On the DMDK-AIADMK ties, a DMDK leader preferring anonymity said: 'Informal discussions are on with AIADMK and a formal announcement may be expected on or after February 7. Our demand is 60 seats and the deputy chief minister's post.'

On the issue of the Congress wanting DMDK to go it alone or be part of the DMK-led alliance, Ramachandran said: 'We have to save politics from Karunanidhi's family.'

Raja and two of his aides were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi Wednesday for their role in the controversial allocation of airwaves for second generation (2G) telecom services.

Raja was forced to resign Nov 14 last year after the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) indicted him in the spectrum allocation scam and for causing losses of between Rs.58,000 crore ($12.8 billion) and Rs.1.76 lakh crore ($40 billion) to the exchequer.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary G.Ramakrishnan took a dig of the DMK organising a series of public meetings to clarify the spectrum issue and clear the party's name.

'I wonder how the party is going to react to the arrest,' Ramakrishnan told IANS.

On the impact of Raja's arrest on electoral prospects of the DMK-Congress combine in the ensuing assembly polls, Ramakrishnan said: 'Even otherwise, people are fed up with the anti-people policies of the state and central governments.'

Commenting on Raja's arrest, political commentator Cho Ramaswamy said Karunanidhi will now not be able to fight back the Congress. He said the DMK will have to depend on the Congress to protect his family members and also Raja.

However, the DMK maintained a studied silence on the issue with its party leaders not available for comment on their senior leader's arrest.

Jaya set to declare tieup with DMDK

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader J Jayalalithaa is all set to formally announce a tie-up with Vijayakanth’s Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam. The AIADMK already has the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Left parties. Vijayakanth’s brother-inlaw and the DMDK’s youth wing secretary LK Sudhish has been holding talks with AIADMK leaders through some mediators. AIADMK is likely to part with about 35 to 40 seats which will make the DMDK the second largest partner in the alliance. Since its inception in September 2005, this would be the first electoral alliance for the DMDK.

DMDK council authorizes Vijayakanth to opt for alliance

From Gopal Ethiraj, Chennai
Chennai 11 January (Asiantribune.com):

Vijaykanth-.jpg
DMDK founder Vijayakanth
Successive electoral defeats and defection of his second rank leaders and cadres has swayed DMDK founder Vijayakanth from his resolve to go it alone until he provides an alternative to the two Dravidian parties -- the DMK and the AIADMK.

He has finally opted for an alliance to make him politically relevant and arrest further erosion of his mass base.

A resolution to that effect was passed by the party’s general council held at Vanagaram in Chennai on Saturday. It has authorized DMDK chief to hold talks with other like-minded parties in this connection.

It also authorised Vijayakanth to have parleys with leaders of those political outfits, who share a common vision with the DMDK and expressed their wish to align with them. The meeting was presided over by party presidium chairman Panruti S Ramachandran.

Launching a scathing attack on the chief minister M.Karunanidhi and his family as a whole, Vijayakanth told the general council members that he was not afraid of any force. “Karunanidhi says the DMDK has lost its strength. DMDK is still strong,” he said. He flayed the DMK for spending crores to buy voters in the by-election and is ready to face any challenge.

Tamil Nadu polls: DMDK open to electoral alliance

Chennai, Jan 10: Actor-turned-politician and DMDK leader Vijaykant on Sunday assured his party cadres that he would forge an alliance for the ensuing assembly elections without affecting the party's self-respect.

Speaking at his party's rally at Salem, around 320 km from here, he told party workers: "You leave the alliance decision to me. I will not pledge the party or its cadres while entering into an alliance."

"Even if I lose my property I will not allow you to lose your self-respect," Vijaykant declared.

Ever since the party was founded in 2005, the DMDK has been fighting the elections - assembly or Lok Sabha - on its own with Vijaykant declaring his alliance was with the people and god.

Party leaders claimed the DMDK's Rights Redemption Conclave was attended by around five million people.

While Vijaykant did not make any adverse comments against the AIADMK or other parties, he targeted the DMK and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in particular. Slamming Karunanidhi for playing the caste card "whenever it is convenient for him", Vijaykant said the DMK leader has Brahmins as his auditors, legal advisors and in other positions, but would condemn them in public.

Referring to Karunanidhi's statement that freebies will be provided by the DMK government till the poor remain in the state, Vijaykant said: "Till Karunanidhi is there in power, the poor will continue to be poor."

He said under the DMK rule, the below the poverty line category has grown if one goes by the 3.17 crore people - nearly 50 percent of the state's population - receiving the free saree and dhothi from the government on the occasion of the Pongal festival.

"Karunanidhi does not give anything out of his pocket. It is only out of the tax-payers money that he announces free schemes which would ultimately benefit his family," Vijaykant said.

Charging that former communications minister A.Raja has brought down the self respect of Tamils with the 2G spectrum scam, Vijaykant wondered why Karunanidhi fears a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe if he has nothing to worry about. (IANS)

Captain tight-lipped on alliance plans

SALEM: DMDK founder Vijaykanth played spoilsport at a much-hyped party meet here on Sunday, revealing nothing about his mind on possible political alliance for the coming Assembly elections.

“Leave it to me,” he told cadres, who waited seven hours to hear his thoughts.

At the end of a circumlocutory speech, when ‘Captain’ asked his cadres to raise their hands if they preferred the party to be in any alliance, a majority approved. After a long pause, however, the DMDK chief said, “Normally in the Legislative Assembly, the majority view would prevail. But in our case, let me make the decision.” He added, “I will not be a stumbling block to your wish but at the same time I don’t want to clinch any opportunistic alliance either.” Undeterred by his ambivalence, his cadres cheered when he said, “You must all be like Krishna and fight the evil force (CM Karunanidhi) out.”

Leaving room for future tie-ups, he said, “Without you, no party in the state can come to power”.

Vijaykanth’s wife Premalatha, brother-in-law L K Sudhish and other party leaders urged cadres help put their leader in power to end the present rule.

Event management at its best

SALEM: The DMDK on Sunday, was able to pull off a mega show, proving that it had the crowd engineering and event management skills that any mature party could boast off.

As DMDK founder Vijaykanth’s brother-in-law and the party’s youth wing leader L K Sudhish put it, “Some crores of rupees are being lavished for the jamboree.”

Christened Makkal Urimai Meetppu Manadu (People’s rights restoration conference), the meet, according to senior party office bearers, was aimed at warming up the cadre for the elections and also to put a show of strength to political parties. This, according to them, would place the party in a better bargaining position during seat negotiations in case the DMDK becomes part of a political alliance.

Even party’s official communiqu├й had reiterated that the arrangements were being made on a grand scale at an expenditure of “several crores of rupees”.

To put the grand scale of the proceedings into perspective, the conference venue measured 66 acres of open space at Gajalnaikenpati, on the outskirts of Salem.

The stage measured 6000 sqft, while the arch at the entrance of the conference venue, was 50 feet high and 240 feet wide, according to the organisers.

Parking lots covering an area of 300 acres in 12 select places around the venue to prevent congestion on the main roads, were also set up. The party’s security wing had been entrusted with the responsibility of managing parking arrangements.

As many as 25 ambulances, with four qualified medical teams and a tie up with a private hospital, formed the emergency medical team put in place by the party’s doctors wing.

Five fire tenders had been sourced and as many as 2500 men and 500 women from the Thondar padai and Mahalir ani (Security wing) took care of security and helped usher in the steady flow of participants.

The party’s lawyers wing had been coordinating with police whenever trouble broke out.

A network of wireless walkie-talkies and a central control room relayed instructions down the line to various levels of leadership.

Vijaykanth slams DMK, Cong for mid-sea murder

CHENNAI: Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) chief Vijayakanth slammed the Congress and the DMK for failing to provide security for the unarmed and innocent fishermen from Tamil Nadu, many of whom have died in attacks by the Sri Lankan navy.

In a statement, he said, “A stage has come when we should take a decision on whether these kinds of governments were needed for the country and the State.”

The Sri Lankan Naval personnel reportedly strangulated a Nagapatinam fisherman Jayakumar to death while he and others were fishing southeast of Kodiakarai in Vedaranyam on Saturday night.

The actor-turned politician criticised the Coast Guard and queried as to what happened to the assurance given to the State chief minister by its commander that the State’s fisherfolk would be protected from attacks by the Sri Lankan navy.

Vijayakanth said the alleged killing of TN fisherman took place around the same time as Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee was in Chennai meeting Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for talks on the forthcoming Assembly elections.

As usual, the Central minister condemned the barbaric act and flew back to Delhi. For his part, Karunanidhi announced a sloatium and completed his routine. But, for the affected fisherman’s family the loss was irreparable, Vijayakanth said.

The DMDK chief said that in recent times, not a single day passed without reports of Sri Lankan naval personnel assaulting innocent and poor fishermen. A few days ago, V Pandian of Jagadapattinam near Pudukottai was killed by the Lankan navy.

Captain promises positive alliance

Jan. 26: Hitting out at the DMK, DMDK leader Vijayakanth on Sunday once again hinted his willingness to ally with the AIADMK for the ensuing Assembly polls.

Firing barbs at Mr Karunanidhi and his family, Mr Vijayakanth who has kept party workers in suspense on possible electoral alliances, told his cadres at DMDK headquarters, “I will align with a party that does not loot people… A party that does not make people weep.” “I will form alliance with a party that will provide employment opportunities, reduce prices and offer good health care to the people,” he said. “I am ready to make any sacrifice for the people’s well-being,” he added, appealing to the people to back whatever alliance he forges. However, he quickly added that he has not decided on a tie-up as yet.

Accusing the CM of visiting New Delhi later this month end only for seatsharing talks, he asked, “Why did he send his son M.K. Stalin the previous time and is going himself this time?”

PMK, DMDK may seek 50 seats each

CHENNAI: Battlelines are drawn for the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu with enough indication that the two fence-sitters, the DMDK and PMK, will align with the AIADMK and DMK respectively.

For the two Dravidian majors, it will be a complex task to satisfy their newfound partners who are likely to demand at least 50 seats each. The AIADMK will have on its side the MDMK, the Left parties and most likely the DMDK. The rival camp will include the DMK, the Congress, the VCK and the PMK.

Since its inception in September 2005, this is the first time that the Vijayakanth-led DMDK would opt to be in a poll alliance. It contested on its own for both the last assembly and Lok Sabha elections. As for the PMK, the party will return to the DMK-fold after a brief estrangement when it teamed up with the AIADMK for the 2009 Lok Sabha election.

The DMDK and the PMK could be hard bargainers given their individual strengths in 10 northern districts from where they have garnered more than 5% of the total polled votes in the state in the previous elections. The DMDK has an equal share of votes, about 5%, spread out in the rest of the state as well. Performance of the two parties in the earlier polls shows that the PMK got 5.89% votes in the 1991 assembly polls, 3.84% in 1996, 5.56% in 2001 and 5.65% in 2006.

The DMDK got 8.38% votes in 2006 elections. While the PMK's vote share remained more or less same at 5.72% in 2009 parliamentary polls, the DMDK bettered its performance by securing 10.08% votes.

The DMDK secured more than 20,000 votes in 27 assembly segments, more than 15,000 votes in 75 segments, more than 10,000 votes in 169 segments and more than 5,000 votes in 228 segments in the last parliamentary polls.

The party polled more than the winner's margins in 161 assembly segments. Since the DMDK had positioned itself as an alternative for both - the DMK and the AIADMK - in the previous polls, its votebank could see some erosion in the event of its aligning with the AIADMK.

Also, one has to factor in the loss to the AIADMK front on account of the PMK shifting to the opposite camp. The polls will not be a cakewalk for either front and a tilt of 10,000 votes per segment could be crucial in a closely contested poll.

The DMDK's electoral strategy will be fine-tuned by a five-member team led by party president Vijayakanth himself. Other members are Panruti S Ramachandran, K Pandiarajan, K R Veerappan and party youth wing leader L K Sudhish. Asked about the seats it would want to contest, Ramachandran, the DMDK party presidium chairman, said, "We have not yet applied our minds on that issue because it also depends on how the alliance is worked out. All I can say now is that we will be the second major partner in the AIADMK alliance."

But there are indications that the DMDK has demanded 50 seats from the AIADMK. The PMK is more forthcoming on its demands. Party leader S Ramadoss recently told the media that the PMK will demand 50 seats. The party contested in 31 assembly seats and won 18 seats in 2006.

Good news on alliance soon: Vijayakanth

CHENNAI: Reiterating that the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) would form an alliance for the forthcoming Assembly elections, party president Vijayakanth said he would align with the party that keeps people happy.

“We will align with a party that people are happy with,” he said at a function organised to welcome cadre from various political parties into the DMDK at the party headquarters here on Wednesday. “The alliance that has DMDK will emerge victorious,” he added.

When party cadre raised the ‘two leaves’ symbol and shouted for AIADMK at the function, he immediately replied that he would bring good news to them soon.

I have no problems in having an alliance with Vijaykanth - actor Sarath Kumar

CHENNAI: Amidst talks of possible alliance with the AIADMK, actor Sarath Kumar on Sunday confirmed that he would definitely be contesting the assembly elections scheduled later this year. However, he remained tight- lipped about the likelihood of his political outfit AISMK (Akhila Indiya Samathuva Makkal Katchi) tying up with AIADMK for the elections. "It's possible, but I can't say anything yet as we are still in the process of talks. I will announce it in a week's time maybe," he said on Sunday where he briefed the media about the formation of a worker's union affiliated to his party called Samathuva Thozhilsanga Kootamaipu.

While confirming his candidature on one hand, Sarath Kumar did not indicate what would be the constituency of his choice from where he would contest for the elections. "I haven't decided yet," he said. "Could be Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Tiruchi or any number of places. Maybe even Chennai." Party sources said the actor is likely to contest from Alangulam, the seat of the current IT Minister and DMK heavy-weight, Ponngothai Aladi Aruna. However, the actor warded off any queries in this regard.

Significantly, he said he would be agreeable to an alliance that included actor Vijayakanth. "I have no problems in having an alliance with Vijaykanth," he said. Actor Vijaykanth's party, the DMDK, is in talks with the AIADMK for the elections.

The actor meanwhile did not spare his punches as he lashed out at the DMK on various issues including the 2G spectrum scam, the recent killing of fishermen, the price rise and the dole of freebies. "I greatly admire the chief minister and consider him to be a father figure to me. But where a wrong has been committed, I shall not hesitate to point out,' he said.

Pointing a finger at the sops given out the ruling party including colour televisions, he said "Freebies are not good for the economy. Instead of colour televisions, they could give out free education and medical treatment or free computers." He said his party would hold discussions on the issue and include it in its party manifesto.

Jayalalithaa set to tie up with Vijaykanth's DMDK

NEW DELHI: With elections to the Tamil Nadu assembly round the corner, main contenders DMK and AIADMK have started finalising their alliances.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi will arrive here shortly to finalise the seat-sharing deal with Congress. His arch-rival J Jayalalithaa is busy courting other stakeholders.

The AIADMK supremo is in the process of forging a broad coalition comprising Left parties, former Union minister Vaiko's MDMK, superstar Vijayakanth's DMDK and former Rajya Sabha member R Sarathkumar's Akila Indiya Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK).

Anxious to build a formidable coalition to defeat the ruling alliance, which is also expected to rope in the Vanniyar-dominated PMK, Jayalalithaa has been holding discussions with Vijayakanth, known as Captain among his fans, and Sarathkumar, who belongs to the Nadar community, in an attempt to shore up her prospects in the ensuing electoral battle.

In the May, 2006 assembly polls, AIADMK, which had entered the electoral ring in the company of MDMK, polled a respectable 32.64% votes, while its alliance partner secured almost 6% votes.

It still lost the battle to the DMK-Congress-PMK combine, which secured 40.49% votes. Vijayakanth's outfit, going solo, fielded its candidates in all but two 234 assembly constituencies, bagged only one seat but polled 8.38% to damage AIADMK's prospects in several constituencies. DMDK repeated the feat in the 2009 general election, forcing Jayalalithaa to rethink her electoral strategy.

A popular film actor who is quite a hit among the youth, Vijayakanth enjoys an across-the-board appeal, while his fellow-actor Sarathkumar's influence is limited to southern districts, where Nadars, who comprise some 2% of the state's voter-base, are present in sizeable numbers.

Left parties, which have considerable clout in districts which have a strong industrial base, were with DMK in the previous assembly polls, but have since gravitated towards AIADMK.

While CPM, which won 9 assembly seats in 2006, cornered 2.65% votes, CPI, which romped home in 6 assembly segments, pulled 1.61% votes.

PMK, which had contested the 2009 general election in Jayalalithaa's company is however, likely to rejoin forces with the DMK-Congress combine, even though a formal decision to this effect is yet to be made.

Political observers from Tamil Nadu agree that Jayalalithaa, with her umbrella alliance, is expected to pose a formidable challenge to the DMK-led grouping. In the past couple of days, AIADMK supremo has undertaken a whirlwind tour of the coastal districts in an effort to whip up anger among the fishing community over the state government's and Centre's 'indifference' to their plight.

Two Tamil fishermen were killed in the last fortnight by the Sri Lankan Navy, and the issue has snowballed into a major political row in the poll-bound state.

AIADMK is also hoping to capitalise on the anti-incumbency sentiment wafting through the state.

Vijayakanth dares Karunanidhi

CHENNAI: Actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth has thrown a challenge at chief minister M Karunanidhi, saying he would contest in the same constituency as the DMK chief for the forthcoming assembly election. Participating in a Pongal function in Villupuram on Saturday, the actor, who heads the DMDK, said, "If need be, I will contest against the chief minister himself."

The actor who is likely to align with the AIADMK, said he would contest in whichever assembly constituency Karunanidhi chose to fight. Vijayakanth's challenge could throw up an interesting electoral contest. In most assembly elections, the DMK chief has contested from the Chepauk assembly constituency that falls within Chennai.

Of late, there has been some talk that the party patriarch is likely to choose a constituency outside the city. Chennai has for long been a DMK citadel. But rival AIADMK stormed its bastion both in the 2006 assembly election and the 2009 Lok Sabha election making considerable gains.

As for Vijayakanth, he has given enough indication that his party would choose the AIADMK over the DMK for the assembly election. At the party's recent Salem conference, Vijayakanth, while declining to make an announcement about the party's decision for the assembly election, merely said no party can come to power in Tamil Nadu without aligning with his DMDK.

His priority, he said was to oust Karunanidhi's "corrupt regime", making it clear that his party would not have any truck with the DMK.

At the Villupuram function, Vijayakanth said he had visited the town after floating his party for the first time in 2005. Stagnant drainage water continued to mess up the ground even now. "This clearly shows that the administration has done very little," he said.

DMDK takes the ‘long road’ to reach record books

SALEM: Close on the heels of Salem Collector J Chandrakumar’s warning of stringent action against violations while erecting flex banners or hoardings, DMDK’s youth wing leader LK Sudhish revealed at an all-party meeting on Friday that the party would attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records with the biggest-ever flex banner/hoarding campaign during the January 9 conference here.

Giving details of the preparations ahead of the show of strength, Sudhish, who is the brother-in-law of party founder Vijayakanth, said the party would try to pull off the first such campaign in the history of Tamil Nadu politics.

Flex banners and flags would be lined up from the party headquarters in Chennai to the conference venue here — covering a distance of 360 km, he said.

A similar ‘road show’ is being planned from Tirumangalam in Madurai — the venue of DMDK’s first conference — to Salem, a distance of 310 km. Yet another line-up of festoons and flags could be seen on the Trichy-Salem NH for a distance of 135 KM.

Moreover, posters of different sizes have already been pasted on public walls. Apart from the sheer volume of digital sycophancy, MGR’s images and pictures of Vijayakanth morphed in the last chief minister’s outfit have been profusely used.

It reaches a crescendo a kilometre away from the meet venue, where giant cut-outs, measuring over 100 ft, of Vijayakanth and wife Premalatha have been erected.

Dravidian leaders like Periyar, Anna and MGR, and statesman Kamaraj find place in one in five banners and party invitations. Although this may suggest that Vijayakanth’s leanings are towards the AIADMK, there are several superimpositions of Vijayakanth’s image against the Assembly, suggesting that taking power is his goal, rather than alliance.

“We have always been using MGR icons because Vijayakanth is after all a follower of his policies,” Sudhish explained. However, he hinted that Vijayakanth was destined to appropriate MGR’s political legacy, as “that is what the people in the state wish”.

When asked about violations during their banner campaign, Sudhish and other senior partymen pointed fingers at other parties.

Vijayakanth team to talk to AIADMK

Jan. 11: Taking forward his promise at the Salem conference to forge an alliance to defeat the DMK regime in the coming elections, the DMDK founder actor Vijayakanth is constituting a three-member team to discuss seat-sharing with the AIADMK when he returns here on Wednesday, sources close to the star-politician said.

They said party presidium chairman Panruti S. Ramachandran would head the team comprising ‘Mafoi’ Pandiarajan and L. K. Sudish, who is Mr Vijayakanth’s brother-in-law. The three are likely to begin ‘exploratory’ discussions with an AIADMK team shortly.

While mounting a blistering attack on Karunanidhi regime at the Salem conference, which saw a huge turnout on Sunday, Mr. Vijayakanth had dropped enough hints regarding forging alliance with the AIADMK.

He could also see that a good majority of the turnout at that rally wanted alliance with Ms Jayalalithaa and waved two fingers to indicate her party’s two-leaves symbol. For her part, Ms Jayalalithaa has maintained silence about ties with the DMDK. She held ‘preliminary’ talks with Left leaders Prakash Karat and A. B. Bardhan.

Meanwhile, some DMDK leaders appeared uncomfortable that the AIADMK channel, Jaya TV, completely blacked out the Salem rally. They expected that the channel would lift its boycott of their Captain but it appeared that the channel managers had not yet received the green signal to cover Karuppu MGR.

DMDK writes to Mamata to increase frequency of Tirukkural Express

Actor Vijayakant's party, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), has written to the Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee to increase the frequency of the Tirukkural Express between Nizamuddin and Kanyakumari running once a week at present as a daily express.

The Delhi Pradesh secretary T. Nagarajan, in his letter to the Minister pointed out that ever since Tirukkural Express was started in October 2002, it was running once a week.

Persistent efforts to increase the frequency of this train had not yielded the desired result so far.

The party said that increasing the frequency of this train to run on daily basis was essential as this was the only direct train from New Delhi connecting the important stations in —Tamil Nadu, viz. Tiruchi, Dindigul, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil and Kanyakumari.

It said that this train had become very popular among the public and the tourists as it connected important tourist destinations.

The party therefore requested the Railway Minister to look into the matter sympathetically and take suitable steps in the coming Railway Budget to make Tirukkural Express run on daily basis.

DMDK looks to increase voteshare in 2011

CHENNAI: The DMDK is positioning itself as a rising sun in Tamil Nadu politics. The party hopes to garner at least 14% of the votes in the upcoming state assembly elections which could swing in favour of the party with which it aligns. A day after DMDK leader Vijaykanth asserted at the party's Salem conference that no outfit in the state could come to power without his support, party's presidium chairman Panruti K Ramachandran told TOI, "In the 2006 assembly elections, we got 8.5% of the votes and the vote percentage went up to 10.5 in the parliamentary elections. Now we hope to get at least 14% of the votes and this will help whichever front we decide to align with in the assembly polls."

Asked how his party supremo had made the claim that the DMDK would decide the winner of the assembly elections, Ramachandran, a key member of the regional outfit's think tank, said, "Even during the last parliamentary elections, DMDK was assessed as a game changer in Tamil Nadu politics". Actor Vijayakanth, busy with the shoot of his latest film Viruthagiri', for the first time on Sunday indicated that his party will align with the AIADMK or parties opposed to the DMK. "We are definitely not with the DMK on various counts like corruption, inefficiency and family rule," said Ramachandran, confident that the front to which the DMDK vote percentage is added will gain. On an electoral tie-up with the AIADMK, he said talks had not begun yet. "Only recently, the AIADMK constituted a committee to negotiate with other parties," he said.

A glance at the electoral records show that the DMDK secured 8.45% of votes in the 2006 assembly polls and won one seat out of the 232 it contested. The party lost deposits in 223 constituencies. In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, the party contested in 40 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state and Puducherry. It forfeited deposits in all the constituencies but secured 10.08% of the votes polled. It has shown at the very least, a confidence to contest from many constituencies.

A senior AIADMK leader was guarded when asked for his comments on Vijayakanth's statement. "This is not the proper time to support or oppose his point of view. Any statement from us at this juncture will only create an adverse situation".

"Vijayakanth's statement (that no party could come to power without his support) cannot to be taken seriously. Almost all junior parties say this kind of thing, sometimes at the national level too. The PMK does it all the time," said political analyst Cho Ramaswamy. On whether the DMDK would be a key player, he said: "The AIADMK needs him (Vijayakanth). Otherwise he will divide votes and help the DMK return to power".

Captain fires salvo at DMK

They are coming to us?!” were supposed to be the first words of a shocked Kanimozhi, MP-daughter of Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi when she got the news of CBI raids in Chennai, particularly on Father Jegath Gaspar, her close associate and head of an NGO called Tamil Maiyam, of which she
related stories

* SC agrees to monitor 2G spectrum allocation scam, starting 2001

was a trustee.

As the sleuths spread the dragnet to track the money trail of the 2G spectrum scam, Karunanidhi and his family had never appeared more vulnerable.

The sleuths had closed in on V Rathnam, the auditor of Karunanidhi’s third wife and Kanimozhi’s mother Rajathi, and A Kamaraj, associate editor of Nakkeeran magazine and very close to both former telecom minister A Raja and Karunanidhi. The writing on the wall was clearer. It was not just Raja who was in the dock.

Also, the DMK strategy, approved by Karunanidhi, to drop Raja to save the party’s image has yielded nothing.

The big question now is whether he can drop Kanimozhi too. Her half-brothers may want just that to save their power but can he hang up on a daughter whose existence he had not acknowledged for many years and was constantly guilt-prodded to do “something” for her?

As murkier deals involving the close family members began to tumble out of the files and diaries, Karunanidhi realised he could save neither his family nor the DMK from the sleaze tag ahead of the assembly polls in April-May 2011.

A fortnight ago, when Karunanidhi was provoked by his political rival, AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa, to re-state his assets, he hadn’t thought that the scam scar would be come so close.

Dismissing her accusations, he had got down to detailing “every penny” he had earned in his life as a film writer - how he had bought a car and his present Gopalapuram house for Rs 45,000 even before he became a minister.

But, by Wednesday evening, his rags-to-life tale paled into insignificance and the needle of suspicion was on himself, his daughter and wife.

Karunanidhi (86) had faced corruption charges earlier too. During 1967-69, his tenure as PWD minister in the first DMK ministry had seen scams. In 1976, Karunanidhi’s ministry was dismissed by the Indira Gandhi government on corruption charges.

But what distinguished his record then and today was the involvement of family members, admit DMK leaders.

“Karunanidhi systematically reduced the DMK to a family business by excluding everyone in the party, and then they indulged in corruption. What face can we show to the people?” says a distressed middle-level DMK leader.

“No corrupt act can get done in the state without Karunanidhi’s approval. That is clear now,” said Cho Ramaswamy, political analyst and the chief minister’s long-standing critic, in his first byte to TV reporters after the raids.

What’s next? With his trust in the Congress belied, Karunanidhi is in no position to take the first step to snap ties with the Congress to show his ire over the CBI raids. If he did so, it would appear he is doing it to stall CBI investigation.

At the same time, with the Congress high command playing a waiting game, he’s not sure that the alliance with his party stays till the elections. Since 2006, Karunanidhi has been depending on a rainbow coalition and the 30-odd Congress MLAs to prop up his minority government without sharing power with them.

Congress MLAs haven’t forgiven Karunanidhi for his deal with Sonia Gandhi to not allow any Congress leader to become a minister.

With a taint image, the Dravidian party is a loser for the Tamil Nadu Congress leaders. They would like their party high command to mull other options. While a section wants to join hands with Jayalalithaa, another wants to follow Rahul Gandhi’s line for other states: walk it alone. The Congress could tie up with parties like actor Vijaykanth’s DMDK, they say.

On the other hand, Jayalalithaa sees a win-win situation either way. Says AIADMK parliamentary party leader V Maitreyan, “Whether the Congress-DMK alliance stays or splits, we are emerging as the people’s choice in the next polls.” She hopes that the AIADMK will replace the DMK in the UPA government, perhaps after the TN polls.

AIADMK leaders reason that a split in anti-DMK votes, a possibility if the Congress goes it alone, suits their party. Jayalalithaa is trying to put up a front and may try to rope in Vijaykanth.

As for the UPA’s stability, the Congress managers are speaking of a “contingency plan” of taking the help of those who would not like a mid-term poll now and dissuade others from toppling the Manmohan Singh government.

Their calculation is that while some of their allies may think that the Congress is targeting them in the name of battling corruption to enable a Rahul Gandhi-led Congress to re-emerge in their states, the fight against sleaze is bound to earn brownies for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in the longer run.
